ACL Reconstruction
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament or ACL serves as a vital stabilizing ligament within the knee joint. ACL injuries may occur when an individual suddenly slows down or changes direction, as is common in many sports. While ACL injuries for people who do not aggressively participate in sports or strenuous exercise may be treated with physical therapy, ACL reconstruction is often a better alternative for athletes, or people who maintain an active lifestyle. Associated injuries, such as involvement of multiple ligaments or tears in the meniscus, may also necessitate surgical intervention. Reconstruction of the ACL involves replacing the torn ligament with tendon from the patient or sometimes a cadaveric donor.
