What is Tommy John Surgery?

Ulnar collateral ligament tears of the elbow are usually the result of overuse, not just a single event. These injuries are very common in professional baseball players but can occur in throwing athletes of all ages and competitive levels. There has been trending data showing more injuries in younger athletes. The injury can also occur from a fall onto the hand or arm leading to a dislocation or subluxation of the elbow. UCL reconstruction, often referred to as Tommy John Surgery, in reference to baseball pitcher Tommy John, replaces the torn UCL with a tendon from another part of the body.  The surgery is intended to stabilize the elbow, reduce pain, and restore range of motion. During his training and time with the Cincinnati Reds, Dr. Kibbe had extensive experience treating UCL injuries.
